What is Acupuncture?

Ancient Healing Practice

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that originated in China over 2,500 years ago. It involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points, to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. These points are located along energy pathways called meridians, which are believed to correspond to different organs and systems in the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the body’s vital energy, or “Qi,” flows through these meridians, and imbalances or blockages in this flow can lead to physical and emotional ailments.

In the context of modern healthcare, acupuncture has been recognized for its ability to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. It is increasingly used as a complementary therapy in the treatment of various conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. At Adira Health & Wellness, we are excited to integrate acupuncture into our holistic approach to mental health and recovery.

How Acupuncture Works

Relaxation & Pain Relief

The effectiveness of acupuncture is rooted in its ability to influence the body’s natural systems. When an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin, it stimulates the central nervous system, triggering the release of endorphins and other neurochemicals that promote relaxation and pain relief. This stimulation can also improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation, which are key factors in the body’s healing process.

From a TCM perspective, acupuncture works by restoring the balance of Qi within the body. By targeting specific acupuncture points, practitioners aim to unblock the flow of energy along the meridians, thereby restoring harmony to the body’s systems. This balance is essential for maintaining physical health and emotional well-being. Modern research has also shown that acupuncture can influence brain activity, particularly in areas related to pain perception and emotional regulation.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Mental Health & Recovery

Acupuncture offers a range of benefits for individuals struggling with mental health challenges and substance use disorders. One of the most significant advantages of acupuncture is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. The calming effects of acupuncture can help to regulate the body’s stress response, making it easier for individuals to manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For those in recovery from substance use disorders, acupuncture can be a valuable tool for managing withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Research has shown that acupuncture can help reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms, such as insomnia, irritability, and cravings for drugs or alcohol. By supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes, acupuncture can also help to restore balance and promote a sense of well-being during the early stages of recovery.

In addition to its mental health benefits, acupuncture is also effective in addressing physical symptoms associated with stress and recovery, such as headaches, digestive issues, and chronic pain. By alleviating these symptoms, acupuncture can enhance overall quality of life and support the body’s ability to heal.

What to Expect in a Session

At Adira Health & Wellness, we strive to make every acupuncture session a relaxing and restorative experience. During your first visit, our acupuncturist will conduct a thorough assessment of your health history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. This assessment helps us create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.

The acupuncture session itself typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. You will be asked to lie down comfortably on a treatment table while the acupuncturist inserts thin needles into specific points on your body. Most people find the process to be painless, with many reporting a sense of deep relaxation during the session. The needles are left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes, during which time you may experience sensations of warmth, tingling, or a gentle pulsing.

After the session, it is common to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Some people may notice immediate improvements in their symptoms, while others may require several sessions to experience the full benefits of acupuncture. Our acupuncturist will work with you to determine the optimal treatment schedule based on your individual needs.
